Bed Cooling System Reviews
Now it is time to look at the top five bed cooling systems out there right now. Read over each one carefully thinking about your specific needs. I’m sure there will be at least one that catches your eye.
Night Bliss Bed Fan
Night Bliss describes their under blanket fan as “… a safe, natural solution to nighttime body heat discomfort … without giving up your warm and cozy bed.” Specifically designed to alleviate the discomfort of night hot flashes, the Night Bliss uses fans to draw fresh air into space between your mattress and bedsheets. The resulting wind tunnel offers instant cooling relief.
The Night Bliss Fan comes in two sizes, one with two fans, and one with three for extra blowing power. It is controlled with a one-button remote that comes as either wired or wireless depending on your preference. You choose your power setting by clicking the button once for full power, twice for medium, and three times for low.
There are two options for turning off the Night Bliss. If you opt for the Cool Flash model, the fan will run for a pre-set amount of time and then turn off. You can always turn the fan off early with the click of a button. The Long Run model stays on until it’s turned off with the remote.
The Night Bliss Bed Fan attaches to the end of your mattress and sits under your sheets and blanket. I found two installation videos to help you see if it will work with your mattress:
Night Bliss Installation
- Powerful fans
- Hard to tip over
- Option for Automatic Turn Off
- Wired remote available
- 3 seconds to cooling relief
- Breeze may disturb partner
- Auto Off and Long Run separate models
- Requires sheet or blanket
Cool Buddy Deluxe Mattress Pad
The Cool Buddy Deluxe bed cooling system uses water circulating through a plastic mattress pad to either cool or warm you as you sleep. It comes with the cooling/heating unit, the mattress pad, and the necessary tubes and cords to connect and run everything. The system is designed to be able to run continuously. You just need to make sure it has enough water and clean it regularly.
The electric mattress pad comes in different sizes and accommodates all bed sizes.
A bonus to having the smaller sizes is that you can purchase two, one for each side of the bed. The Cool Buddy Deluxe can only be configured for either hot or cold. You have to change the tubes to switch between the two.
The Cool Buddy runs quietly and efficiently and provides powerful heating and cooling. Many might find that the highest cooling setting freezes them out. You can turn the unit down or move it under your mattress cover.
If you like the feel of a waterbed, this might be a good option for you. If you rather not feel the water circulating underneath you, or you are bothered by the plastic feel, it would be better to try a different option. This video shows how to set up the Cool Buddy Deluxe:
Cool Buddy Heating/Cooling Model Setup
- Excellent customer service
- Cooling and heating option
- 5 settings
- The highest setting gets really cold
- Cooling unit must be higher than bed
- Poorly written instruction manual
- Weekly cleaning required
- Must be refilled daily
ChiliPad Cube Dual Zone Electric Mattress Pad
The ChiliPad Cube uses water circulated through microtubes to regulate the temperature of the mattress pad. It has a wide temperature range with settings from 48F to 118F. The king size model has two zones, one on each side of the bed. This allows you and your partner to have separate temperature settings. Both of you can have a good night’s rest without having to purchase two different units or have barriers between them. This YouTube video explains how the Chili Pad Cube works:
ChiliPad Cube – How It Works
ChiliPad boasts the ability to save you money on your energy bill. Built to run all night and keep itself at a constant temperature, it allows you to turn down the heater or AC and still have a restful night.
Unlike other bed cooling systems that use water, the ChiliPad uses small tubes that you can hardly feel to circulate the water. This reduces the sensation of sleeping on a waterbed. That could be a plus or a minus depending on what you like.
The cooling/heating units do work best if they are placed on a bedside table but can be used on the floor. However, you should not put them under the bed.
Since the ChiliPad uses water you will have to refill it from time to time. Making sure that you check it regularly for leaks, and keeping the unit clean will help avoid mold or water damage.
If you want something that has a slow, gentle cooling sensation, with no moving air, this is probably a good choice.
- Dual zones in a single unit
- Wide temperature range
- Does not feel like a waterbed
- Less prone to leaking
- Energy efficient
- Can’t put cooling/heating units under bed
- Poor Customer Service
- Requires regular maintenance
Brookstone Bed Fan
The Brookstone Bed Fan is a tall fan unit designed to blow air gently between your sheets. It runs all night and is controlled by a modern-looking wireless remote that sits comfortably on your nightstand. For people who tend to forget to turn things off, it has an automatic shut off after running for 10 hours.
The adjustable height of the Brookstone Bed Fan makes it versatile enough to use with almost any mattress or bed frame. Unlike other fan models we have discussed, the Brookstone can be used either between the sheets or above your bedding. You can also position at the side, or at the end of your bed. The Brookstone is undoubtedly adaptable which makes it useful for many different needs.
This fan’s slim and sleek design makes it attractive while minimizing the space it takes up in your room. The tall, funnel-like tube directs air follow in one direction. The air travels in a wide flat stream instead of a broad blast wind.
If you run hot at night but tend to have cold feet, you might want to put on a pair of socks to keep them from freezing. Even with socks on, the Brookstone can keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night.
The remote control is one of the most interesting features of the Brookstone. It sits on a nice wide base that makes it perfect for sitting on a nightstand. You won’t have to worry about knocking it over in the middle of the night then having to search under your bed. It is backlit, so is easily visible in the dark, but not so brightly that it will disturb your sleep.
The Brookstone Bed Fan is probably the best cooler if you like the feeling of air blowing on you at night.
- Adjustable to work with tall mattresses/beds
- Washable air filter
- 10-hour auto shutoff
- Lightweight compact design
- Can be used between or above sheets
- Multiple position options
- Only works with light blankets
- Easy to knock over
- Breeze not localized to one side
BedJet V2 Cooling and Heating Fan
The BedJet V2 climate control bed fan consists of a Cooling/Heating unit that can be stored under the bed. A large tube runs from the unit to a nozzle attached to the bed with a special mount. Though you can use the BedJet as is, the performance is much better if you also purchase their Air Comforter.
The special comforter has openings for the BedJet’s nozzle. The air flows into pockets in the comforter to ensure even distribution of the cooling effect. BedJet recommends the comforter if you are purchasing it for cooling. If you opt for the dual-zone version the comforter is included with the two cooling/heating units.
One of the benefits of the BedJet V2 is that it offers cooling and heating without using circulating water. Because it does not use water, the unit does not need to be placed above the mattress and can be stored under the bed.
If you are looking for something that provides different temperatures on each side, but don’t want a system that uses water, the BedJet V2 might be the one. You will need the Air Comforter so buying both units together, rather than one at a time, is probably your best fan option.
- Comes in either dual or single zone
- Customizable heating/cooling profiles
- Unit works for all size beds
- Even distribution of air (if used with their comforter)
- Stores under the bed
- Uses room temperature air
- Requires special comforter sold separately
- Tends to be noisy
What Is A Bed Cooler?
Simply put, a bed cooler is a mechanical device designed to cool you down while you sleep in your bed. There are many kinds of bed cooling systems on the market. Some use water filled mattress pads. Others use fans or air convection. There are even cooling systems that double as bed warmers for cold nights.
The goal of any bed cooler is to help you maintain a comfortable body temperature. More comfortable means better sleep and better health. Even if you like to be warm when you sleep but suffer from hot flashes, there is a solution to this.
Why Are Bed Cooling Systems Beneficial?
According to WebMD, and my personal experience, “…the temperature of your sleep area and how comfortable you feel in it affect how well and how long you snooze.” I often suffer from insomnia, and when I do finally get to sleep at night, I usually wake up several times because of being either too hot or too cold.
If you have researched the ideal sleeping conditions, you will have discovered that many sources disagree on the perfect temperature for sleep. According to WebMD’s article, specific ranges are difficult to specify because each person is different. Differences in preference are probably why there are many ways to both cool down and warm up while sleeping.
The inability to sleep deep and long enough has many negative impacts on your health. These are the ten surprising side effects of lack of sleep headings quoted directly:
- Sleepiness causes accidents
- Sleep loss dumbs you down
- Sleep deprivation can lead to serious health problems
- Lack of sleep kills sex drive
- Sleepiness is depressing
- Lack of sleep ages your skin
- Sleepiness makes you forgetful
- Losing sleep can make you gain weight
- Lack of sleep may increase the risk of death
- Sleep loss impairs judgment, especially about sleep
My sensitivity to the temperature at night has allowed me to experience many of the things listed above. In the search to solve my sleep problems, I tried many things such as not watching TV before sleeping, making the room completely dark, listening to music, white noise, and other calming sounds various sleep apps. Nothing seemed to help, and it was becoming rather frustrating. Having tried everything, I then learned that one of the most important sleep factors is the thermal environment.
In Kazue Okamoto-Mizuno Koh Mizuno’s article in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, their study showed that it is vital to maintaining a comfortable temperature through the night and that it has a correlative impact on daytime performance and overall health. Any parent, athlete, full-time employee, or human being probably knows this from personal experience.
I had a few people suggest that I adjust my thermostat to solve my sleeping issues. The problem is I am not the only person who sleeps in my house. You might have the added complication of not being the only person that sleeps in your room or even the same bed. Thankfully, a good bed cooler can help with all of that.
Using a fan, pad or mat that cools down your sleeping area has some fringe benefits. A bed cooling system for night sweats can cause a lot of relief if you suffer from them. They can come in handy during pregnancy if always too hot at night. Many women are using these for menopausal hot flashes too.
Aside from medical or other physical conditions, these products are a cost-effective alternative to leaving the aircon on all night. Some systems even allow a couple to have different temperatures on their side of the bed. This is commonly known as dual-zoned.
How To Choose A Bed Cooler
Now the question is: how do you choose the best bed cooling system for your personal needs? There are several factors to consider.
Do you want something like an electric cooling blanket? If you like the weight of a blanket but find they make you too hot, one of these might be a perfect choice.
Some people might prefer to lay on top of their cooling system instead. In that case, you should look for an electric cooling mattress pad (see the ChiiliPad Cube or the Cool Buddy Deluxe below). These go on top of your mattress, and should not be confused with cooling mattress toppers.
I find that it is not just the temperature of my body, but also the presence of moving air that helps me sleep. My ideal bed cooler would include a fan that blew air over me while I slept. Just thinking of the cooling touch of air on my skin makes me want to curl up and go to sleep. Bed cooling fans are one of the most popular and effective solutions on the market. Check the BedJet V2 review below. The Brookestone Bed Fan is also a great option.
Another consideration is whether you share the bed with a partner. Do you both like to sleep in the same environment? Or does one of you want to be cool and the other toasty warm? If you are like most couples, it’s most likely there will be different requirements when it comes to temperature and sleep.
Have no fear, there are options out there for you. Some dual zone bed cooling systems double as warmers too. One of the models listed below (the ChilliPad) has accessories that make it easy to keep each side of the bed at a different temperature.
Space and power consumption are also things to seriously consider. Some bed cooling systems take up more space than others. Some attach to the end of the bed, while others are neatly placed underneath. Others are more like additional bedding which are very minimal. If you get a mattress pad or a blanket, then you also need to think about how easy these items are to keep clean. And since all of these systems are electric in some way, they will draw power. If you are trying to keep the household electrical consumption down, this may be a deciding factor.
Last but not least, the budget is always a factor in any purchase we make. Luckily several bed cooling systems on the market will provide the comfort and relief needed to sleep well—without breaking the bank.
As you have probably noticed, it is hard to choose a clear-cut winner among the five options above. The problem is that each person has different requirements for a comfortable night’s sleep. But, if you divide the options into the two kinds, fans and bed pads, there are forerunners for each.
The ChiliPad Cube wins out over the Cool Buddy for its higher quality and more modern construction. If you want a mattress pad to help cool you off at night, and you don’t mind the water, it is probably the best cooling option.
If you are looking for a fan, rather than a mattress pad, then the choices are the Night Bliss, Brookstone Bed Fan, and BedJet V2. We’re more inclined to lean toward the BedJet V2 due to its features and solid build quality.
The bottom line is that it is your bed, and your sleep. Careful consideration of personal factors is essential in choosing which is the best bed cooling system for you.
I would like to end by offering my personal recommendation. As I mentioned, I’m a hot sleeper and like the feel of a fan. But I need something that will run all night, so my personal choice is the Brookstone Bed Fan.
