Dynasty Mattress S-Cape

Dynasty Mattress S-Cape

The Dynasty Mattress adjustable bed base is an extremely popular platform that has been adopted and integrated into many combination sleep systems by different manufacturers. In this case, the S-Cape comes combined with two uber comfy DynastyMattress 12″ Deluxe memory foam mattresses, which in our opinion is the best adjustable bed combo for the money.

Firstly, the bed: It comes with two backlit wireless remote controls which can independently control each of the Split King beds. The ultra quiet motor is stronger than most with an impressive total lifting capacity of 700 pounds, which can be adjusted to move head or feet into hundreds of precise positions. As well as the patented Wallhugger technology, it has a dual massage feature for upper and lower body and two programmable custom memory positions. Made in the USA, it is CSA-certified to both UL and CSA-applicable electric motor standards and comes with a 20-year warranty.

Secondly, the mattress: The included two 12″ thick mattresses are made with a traditional 5″ visco elastic memory foam comfort layer and a 7″ highly flexible polyurethane foam base. It is already a best seller when sold separately but works great as an adjustable mattress when teamed with the S-Cape due to its unique flexible yet firm build quality. Simply put, a great combination which is very hard to rival.

What Is An Adjustable Bed?

A white adjustable bed in a zero gravity positionKnown by many different names such as a zero gravity bed, reclining, electric, or hospital beds for home use, in the simplest form, an electric adjustable bed is one that can have the sleep surface (or mattress) elevated and adjusted by using mains powered controls to suit the desired position better. The surface can be elevated at either the upper body are (to sit upright) or lower body area (to raise legs), or both at the same time if you wish (to create a zero gravity effect). A hidden electric powered hydraulic motor controls typically the motion.

Buy, Or Not?

Like with most things there are indeed pros and cons of using the adjustable bed base as opposed to the more common traditional platform. For your information we have listed some of those points below:

ProsRelaxation time: It’s a common assumption that electric beds are used purely by the elderly or poorly. This isn’t entirely true. In recent times they have become popular among a variety of consumers due to their multipurpose transformability. For example, people regularly elevate the back to work from home, watch TV or read without having to reshuffle or use multiple bed pillows.

Extra comfort: Hugely popular with not only the elderly but also maximizes comfort for people with body aches and chronic pains in general. Also, for those with mobility issues which are bedridden for extended periods of time, the customizable features make it easy to adjust specific parts such as the upper or lower area for extra comfort.

More natural positioning: Getting in and out of bed for some can be difficult, especially for those with knee or hip pain. When adjusted to an upright position it can become much easier for a person to step in or out safely and without pain. This can also be advantageous for anyone offering care assistance to those of ill health, as it’s much easier tending to someone who’s in an upright position as opposed to a person lying flat.

Zero gravity: Although there is no such thing as a truly zero gravity bed, with the custom positions that can be achieved by using the electric controls, usually there is scope to remove a considerable amount of downward pressure by merely raising the upper and lower parts of the platform. This type of resting position is excellent for people who suffer from body pain such as the neck, back, and hip, which require pressure point relief.

Relocate with ease: Due to the metal frame and motor, a typical Queen size adjustable bed base, for example, can easily weigh more than 150 pounds. Thankfully like with traditional hospital beds, many of the better quality home versions come with casters which make it much easier to relocate within the room or around the home if required.

No more rental: Bearing a striking resemblance to those found in hospitals and mostly serving the same functionality, traditionally hospital bed rental would be the way forward for some home patients or the elderly. With the exception of side rails (which can sometimes be purchased and added later as extras), these are definitely the closest to a valid alternative. No more looking at hospital beds for rent because considering a basic rental can cost $150 per week, even buying a top rated adjustable bed can save thousands and pay itself off in a short amount of time.

ConsPrice: Whether purchasing the beds with mattress included as part of a combo deal or simply as a single unit without, adjustable bed prices are not cheap in comparison to other standard traditional types such as four posters, platforms and bunks. However, purchasing a bed and mattress combo deal often works out less expensive than buying both items separately.

Aesthetics: Most have a simple metal bed frame that is quite visible from the side, and so are the four relatively high legs. This isn’t to everyone’s taste but can potentially be covered by some extra large flowing sheets.

Mechanics: As with anything mechanical there is room for breakdowns. This isn’t to say any fault will occur, but if you encounter any issues, hopefully, this can be easily resolved with the included warranty.

Adjustable Bed Buying Guide & Top Tips

If you have never owned any type of electric adjustable beds before, it’s worth reading the buying guide below because there are so many different features and specifications to look out for. Each one can vary greatly, and the worst thing is buying something so big and expensive, only to later find that for a little extra money you missed out on a key desirable feature.

Lifting Capacity

Lifting CapacityAll adjustable beds for sale in this day and age should specify the total weight it can lift. Most often this figure is specified in pounds (lbs) but also seen in kilograms (kg) too. The smaller Twin and Full size will typically have a lesser lifting capacity compared to King or Queen; this isn’t unusual, but in general for obvious reasons the heavier load it can lift the better. It’s worth noting that this figure is to include the mattress weight too.

Remote Control

Remote ControlAn electric motor elevates every adjustable bed base under the sleep surface. The motor itself is controlled by a controller which comes with the bed. The controller is sometimes hard-wired and can be neatly tucked away, or, it can also be wireless like your TV remote. Some people have a personal preference as to which type but neither is better than the other. Some remote controls are however more advanced than others, for example, it may be backlit, or may provide access to additional features such as the massager or pre-set memory positions.

Wallhugger Engineering

WallhuggerWhen it comes to reclining beds and specs, Wallhugger engineering is a familiar buzz-word which for some is a highly desirable feature. Essentially wallhugging means when the upper body area of the base elevates it simultaneously reverses and comes closer to the wall behind it, thus bringing you closer to any bedside table as opposed to pushing away like all non-wallhuggers. It’s usually the top end models which have this state-of-the-art feature, so be prepared to pay a little more if this appeals to you.

Adjustable Mattress

MattressIt’s worth noting that not all adjustable electric beds come with a mattress supplied. Some are sold as a package and will be stated in the description. For those which come without, you’ll need to order one separately which will have to match your chosen bed size. It’s a common myth that a particular type of adjustable bed mattress is required. This is not true, but, in general, you should avoid anything with springs as they are quite rigid so will have trouble flexing when elevated.

Additionally, because a vast majority of air mattresses are designed with some kind of their own base for support, especially if using a double height, it’s wise not to use these either. In the long term, they can potentially spring leaks, even if they work fine, to begin with. Therefore the best option would be a memory foam mattress as they can flex in and out of position very easily without becoming damaged.

WarrantyAlmost all types of bed you purchase will come with a manufacturer’s warranty, whether it’s one year or ten. Likewise, electric beds do too, usually longer than other kinds, however, we cannot stress the importance of having a warranty on one of these due to the mechanical functionality which is what differs from the basic nature of traditional beds. Hopefully, nothing should go wrong throughout usage, but faults can arise in due time. So that you’re covered, preferably seek anything up to and over 10 years.

Dual Adjustable Bed/Dual Control

Dual adjustable beds are made with multiple sleepers in mind. They are designed so that a couple can easily control each side of their bed without the other member of the pair being forced into the same position. This is an excellent feature since we all know that being in a relationship doesn’t always mean we need the same mattress or sleeping position as our partner.

Dual adjustable beds are available as upper movement only or upper and lower movement. These are usually only available in Queen and King size since they are made for couples.

You may also want to consider how loud the bed is when being adjusted. If your goal is to have both partners sleep comfortably, you should ensure that you are not going to wake one another up anytime you need to adjust your sleeping position.

Adjustable Beds For Elderly/Seniors

Elderly iconWhen adjustable beds were first entering the market, the target demographic was the elderly. Since growing older comes with its set of medical issues, adjustable bed makers did their best to create electric beds that would help with circulation, breathing problems, and other medical facts of life that go along with aging and poor health.

If you are looking for an adjustable bed for the elderly, remember that you will want one that adjusts at the head and feet to help with drainage and circulation. You will also want to ensure it is an electric bed, not manual, and that it utilizes a remote control. This is essential so that seniors with mobility issues don’t have to maneuver to the side of the bed or get off completely to make adjustments. Finally, look for one with an adjustable height to make entering and getting up easy.

Sizes and Dimensions

Size iconAdjustable bed bases can be slightly larger than your average bed because of all of the bells and whistles, but on average, the mattresses for these remain standard sizes so that you do not have to purchase specialized sheets or bedding.

Let’s take a look at the average sizes and dimensions for adjustable beds, noting that height will vary based on many factors, so it will not be included here.

  • Twin: 38” W x 75” L
  • Full: 54” W x 75” L
  • Queen: 60” W x 80” L
  • King: 76” W x 80” L
  • Split King: Two pieces at 38” W x 80” L, a total of 76” when measured across both pieces
  • California King: 72” W x 84” L

Adjustable Massage Beds/Massage Features

Some of the luxurious electric beds we review on the market come with extra specs and features like massagers and heat. These are great if you suffer from chronic back pain or circulation issues. The massagers on these usually run from your head to your feet (depending on brand), but they will range in price based on what functions they have (i.e., shiatsu versus simple vibration).

On split mattresses where massage is an option, couples can experience their personalized massage without disturbing their partner. This is an impressive feature if you are looking for a bed that will allow both of you to have a great night’s sleep. Also, massage beds often come with built-in heat that is also adjustable on either side of split mattresses, meaning ultimate relaxation anytime you need.

Reclining Bed and Multi-Angle Functionality

There are so many types of adjustable beds, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Reclining beds are the most basic type in this category that you can find. Mostly, these merely bend at the top so that you can sit up or recline back and multiple angles. These are considered to be the best for snoring. Additionally, they help to achieve relaxation while watching TV.

Most of the best adjustable beds these days have multi-angle functionality. What that means is, you will have the ability to adjust both the position of your head and feet at a variety of angles and your comfort is entirely customizable to your needs. This is not true on all reclining beds, as some have set positions and angles, so keep these features in mind when shopping.

Adjustable Bed Frames (Non-Electronic)

non-electric iconIt is rare to find a manual adjustable bed frame in a world where luxury is king, but that doesn’t mean they are altogether extinct. Manual adjustable beds still exist and are good options for individuals who have no mobility issues, or those who do not need to adjust their sleeping position multiple times a night.

If you are looking for a reclining bed that will allow you to set your sleeping position, but you know once you are in that position, you can stay all night; this may be an excellent option for you. These bed frames are far less expensive than automatic beds, and they fit the same mattresses, so there’s no need to spend any extra money to get what you need.

Extra Features

Your bed is supposed to be the place where you can relax and unwind. Because of that, most of the best adjustable bed manufacturers are continually adding features that allow you to stay in bed and relax while doing the things you love, or the things you need to do.

Electric adjustable beds now come with tons of fun extra features to benefit from. For example, you can get USB charging ports so your devices will never die while you lay around and relax, built-in speakers with Bluetooth technology, and adjustable legs to make entering and exiting your bed much simpler. Other features include massage, heating and cooling, and pillow tilting which moves just the very top of the bed up like a pillow to help you breathe easier.

Delivery and In-Home Assembly Options

Delivery iconFor the most part, you can assume that your new adjustable bed will be put together upon delivery to your home. However, on the rare occasion that it is not, you will likely spend a good chunk of time assembling it.

If your new bed frame is manual (non-electric), it will take much less time, but you still want to ensure you are precisely following all protocols. Moving parts make things more complicated; it’s just a fact of life, so read the directions a few times before attempting to assemble it.

Make sure you talk to someone about delivery and assembly when you make your purchase to avoid the hassle of DIY bed assembly. Many times delivery and assembly are free, or very inexpensive.

We test and review multiple products from many different manufacturers, but on this website, we document only the top rated of the bunch. From our adjustable bed reviews for 2020, we selected to include a number of top-end and mid-range bases, all from well known reputable brands in which we place our trust.

In our opinion, the number one choice is the Saatva Lineal. However, the best adjustable beds are ones which suit your every need. Some people would like to pay extra for features such as massage and Wallhugger technology, whereas others don’t mind a basic type which simply lifts and drops. Whichever your preference and budget, you can’t go wrong with any of the models listed here.

  1. I like the fact that adjustable beds can actually make a good recliner even when lying in the bed without pulling some pillows to support your back from staying that long in that posture while watching tv or reading a book. I’ve always wanted to do that in a bed because either I lean my back on several pillows or at the cabinet that is just at the back of the bed. It can be a sore in the back and the neck if I stay in the posture that long so I am eyeing to buy an adjustable bed that fits right in my height for comfort.

  2. Bought an adjustable bed, split king really two separate XL twins, and memory foam mattress at a home expo. Overpaid for my REM mattress, Reverie base. Love having an adjustable bed but did not consider how important the wallhugger design is since we don’t have it. Extra effort to reach our bedside tables. Also, even with the mattress corner and end brackets, mattress shifts sometimes. Motor is quiet and movement is smooth-no complaints on the base. But it still all comes down to the mattress…
