Mattress Size Names and Their Dimensions

Twin Size Mattresses (39″ wide x 75″ long)

Ideal for solo sleepers, the cozy twin mattress invites you to retreat into a world of uninterrupted slumber. With its compact size and comfortable design, this mattress is perfect for those who prefer to sleep alone. Measuring 39 inches wide and 75 inches long, twin size mattresses provide ample space for single sleepers to stretch out and find their ideal position while sleeping. Whether you are a side sleeper, back sleeper, or stomach sleeper, this mattress will accommodate your needs and offer the right amount of support.

Not only does the twin size mattress provide enough room for single sleepers, but it also fits perfectly in smaller bedrooms or guest rooms. Its dimensions make it easy to maneuver through tight spaces and fit into any corner of your home. Additionally, this mattress is often more affordable compared to larger sizes, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious individuals. So if you are a single sleeper looking for a cozy and practical bedding solution, look no further than the twin size mattress. It offers comfort, affordability, and convenience all in one package.

Twin XL Size Mattresses (39″ wide x 80″ long)

Looking for a mattress with extra length to accommodate your tall frame? Consider the twin XL size, perfect for taller individuals who want a comfortable and spacious sleeping experience. With its additional 5 inches in length compared to the standard twin size, the twin XL provides more room for your legs to stretch out without sacrificing width. This means you can enjoy a restful night’s sleep without feeling cramped or confined.

The benefits of choosing a twin XL mattress go beyond just providing extra length. Its narrow width makes it ideal for smaller spaces such as dorm rooms or studio apartments where every inch counts. Additionally, the twin XL size is often more affordable than larger mattress sizes, making it a budget-friendly option for those looking to upgrade their sleep setup. Whether you’re a college student in need of a comfortable bed or simply someone who values ample legroom while sleeping, the twin XL size offers the perfect solution with its combination of extra length and reasonable price point.

Full Size Mattresses (54″ wide x 75″ long)

As adolescents go through growth spurts, full-size mattresses provide them with plenty of space to stretch out and find comfort in their ever-changing bodies. Growing teenagers need a mattress that can accommodate their increasing height and weight. A full-size mattress, also known as a double mattress, measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long, offering ample room for an adolescent to sleep comfortably without feeling confined or restricted. It is the perfect size for those who are transitioning from a smaller bed but still need more space to move around.

In addition to providing enough space for growing teenagers, full-size mattresses offer a variety of options to suit different preferences. There are various types of mattresses available in this size range, including memory foam, innerspring, hybrid, and latex. Each type offers its own unique level of comfort and support.

Full XL Size Mattresses (54″ wide x 80″ long)

The full XL mattress offers a longer alternative to the traditional full mattress, making it an excellent choice for taller individuals who enjoy the comfort of sleeping alone. Measuring 54 inches wide and 80 inches long, it presents enough width for one person to sleep comfortably without feeling confined, while the extra length gives plenty of legroom for those with a taller frame.

The full XL mattress is perfect for those seeking a middle ground between a full and queen-size mattress. While retaining the manageable width of the full mattress, which makes it suitable for smaller bedrooms, it offers the same length as a queen or king mattress, accommodating taller sleepers without compromising space.

This size of mattress is often an overlooked choice, but it’s ideal for studio apartments or smaller rooms that require a compact bed that still provides plenty of room for stretching out. Plus, with the varied options of innerspring, memory foam, latex, or hybrid types, you’re sure to find a full XL mattress that matches your comfort preferences and supports you through a restful night’s sleep.

Queen Size Mattresses (60″ wide x 80″ long)

Queen size mattresses, with their versatility and popularity, are the perfect choice for those who want ample space to stretch out and find comfort. Whether you sleep alone or share your bed with a partner, a queen size mattress provides just the right amount of room to move around without feeling cramped. This mattress size is also ideal for guest rooms as it can accommodate most sleepers comfortably. With its dimensions of approximately 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, a queen size mattress offers enough space for individuals who prefer to sprawl out or couples who like to cuddle up together.

The versatility of queen size mattresses extends beyond sleeping arrangements. They are also suitable for various types of bedrooms and lifestyles. Whether you have a small apartment or a spacious master bedroom, a queen size mattress can fit seamlessly into any space without overwhelming the room’s design. Additionally, this mattress size is popular among shoppers due to its availability in different materials and styles. You can choose from memory foam, hybrid, or innerspring options, depending on your personal preferences and desired level of comfort.

King Size Mattresses (76″ wide x 80″ long)

With its generous dimensions of 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, king size mattresses provide ample space for couples to sleep comfortably without feeling cramped or restricted. The extra width allows each person to have their own sleeping zone, reducing disturbances caused by movement during the night. You can enjoy the freedom of spreading out, finding your preferred sleeping position, and waking up refreshed.

Not only does a king size mattress offer unmatched spaciousness benefits, but it also enhances your sleep quality. With more room to move around, you are less likely to disturb your partner when changing positions or getting in and out of bed. This can lead to uninterrupted sleep throughout the night, promoting deeper restorative rest. Additionally, having a larger surface area means that there is less chance of feeling confined or trapped, resulting in increased relaxation and reduced tossing and turning.

California King Size Mattresses (72″ wide x 84″ long)

When it comes to luxury mattress options, the California king size mattresses are truly in a league of their own. With its generous dimensions of 72 inches wide and 84 inches long, this mattress offers ample room for even the tallest individuals to fully relax and find their perfect sleeping position. Whether you prefer to sleep sprawled out or with your arms stretched above your head, a California king size mattress ensures that you have plenty of space to do so.

The benefits of choosing a California king size mattress go beyond just its expansive dimensions. This larger-than-life bed provides optimal support and pressure relief, promoting better spinal alignment and reducing the risk of waking up with aches and pains. Additionally, if you share your bed with a partner or pets, the extra width allows for undisturbed slumber as you won’t have to worry about bumping into each other during the night. The luxurious space offered by a California king size mattress creates an atmosphere of opulence and relaxation, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in a restful night’s sleep.

Factors to Consider When Selecting a Mattress Size

When considering the perfect mattress size, it’s important to take into account factors such as room dimensions and personal sleeping preferences. One of the main factors to consider is the size of your bedroom. Measure your room and determine how much space you have available for a bed. This will help you decide whether you can accommodate a larger mattress or if you need to opt for a smaller size to maximize space.

Another factor to consider is your personal sleeping preferences. Do you like to stretch out and have plenty of space while sleeping? Or do you prefer a more cozy and snug feeling? If you’re someone who likes extra room, then a larger mattress size such as a California King or King might be the best option for you. On the other hand, if you prefer a more compact and intimate sleeping environment, a Queen or Full-size mattress might be more suitable.

Additionally, it’s important to consider any potential future changes in your living situation. Are you planning on moving soon or upgrading to a larger bedroom? If so, it might be wise to invest in a larger mattress now that can accommodate those future changes. However, if you anticipate downsizing or sharing your bedroom with a partner or pets in the near future, it may be better to choose a smaller mattress size that can comfortably fit within those constraints.

Pros and Cons of Different Mattress Sizes

One thing to consider is that larger mattress sizes like California King or King offer more space for stretching out and finding the perfect sleeping position. The advantage of having a larger mattress size is that it provides ample room for individuals who prefer to spread out while sleeping. Whether you’re someone who likes to sleep in a starfish position or simply needs more space to move around comfortably, a bigger mattress can accommodate your sleeping preferences. Additionally, if you share your bed with a partner or pets, having a larger mattress size can minimize disturbances caused by movement during the night.

However, it’s important to note some disadvantages of opting for a larger mattress size. One major drawback is the cost. Larger mattresses are typically more expensive than smaller ones due to their increased material and construction. Moreover, they require larger bedding and sheets, which can also add up in terms of cost. Another disadvantage is the space required in your bedroom. If you have limited square footage in your bedroom, fitting in a California King or King-size mattress may not be feasible without sacrificing other furniture or creating a cramped environment. It’s crucial to carefully measure your room before deciding on a larger mattress size to ensure it will fit comfortably within your space limitations.

Tips for Measuring Your Space and Choosing the Perfect Mattress Size

Ensure you measure your space accurately and choose the perfect mattress size to create a cozy sanctuary that will make you feel like you’re sleeping on cloud nine. Start by measuring the dimensions of your bedroom, including the length, width, and height. This will give you a clear idea of how much space is available for the mattress. Additionally, consider any furniture or other items that may take up space in your bedroom and make sure to account for them in your measurements.

When it comes to choosing the perfect mattress size, there are a few measuring techniques that can help. One popular technique is to use painter’s tape or masking tape to outline the dimensions of different mattress sizes on your bedroom floor. This can give you a visual representation of how each size will fit in your space and help you determine which one will work best.

Another consideration when choosing a mattress size is space-saving solutions. If you have limited space but still want a comfortable sleep experience, consider options such as a twin XL or full-size mattress instead of a queen or king. These sizes can provide ample comfort while taking up less room in your bedroom.

By carefully measuring your space and considering different mattress sizes, you can find the perfect fit for creating a cozy sanctuary where you’ll wake up feeling refreshed every morning. So don’t forget to utilize these measuring techniques and explore space-saving solutions to ensure that every inch of your bedroom is optimized for restful sleep.

Conclusion

In conclusion, choosing the right mattress size is crucial for a comfortable and restful sleep experience. It is important to consider your personal sleeping preferences, the size of your bedroom, and any future changes in sleeping arrangements when selecting a mattress size.

If you are a single sleeper or have limited space, a twin size mattress would be an ideal choice. For taller individuals, a twin XL size mattress provides that extra length for added comfort, whereas a Full-size mattress is perfect for growing adolescents who need more room as they develop.

For couples or those who prefer more space to stretch out while sleeping, queen size mattresses are versatile and popular choices. And if you are on the taller side and want luxurious space to move around freely, California king size mattresses offer ample room.

When choosing a mattress size, it’s essential to measure your space accurately and consider factors such as ease of movement and compatibility with existing bed frames or furniture. Additionally, weighing the pros and cons of different sizes can help you make an informed decision.

In conclusion, finding the perfect mattress size involves careful consideration of various factors such as personal preference, available space, and future needs. By taking these into account and understanding the pros and cons of each option, you can ensure that your new mattress provides optimal comfort for restful nights ahead. So take the time to measure your space correctly and choose wisely – your sleep quality depends on it!

  1. Look for sheets that are maerkd as deep pockets. This means that they have a little more material in them for the really thick mattresses that are around now. These will give you the extra material you need. Don’t get the Twin XL, all that does is give you more length, not width.

  2. My mattress measures 70″ wide, by 81 long by 10 ” deep. What size sheets should I buy? I was told it was a California King but the sheets are always too big..

    1. I have a mattress that is a 70×76 with a 9 inch depth. I can not find sheets I need to fit. They fit one way but not the other. I keep buying and having to return because nothing fits. What size sheets do I need?

    2. Hi there, I have a camper mattress that measures 77” long x62” wide by 6” deep what size sheet set do I purchase? It’s a foam camper mattress.

  3. Could you pl tell me if my mattress is 6.5 ft in height and 7.5 ft in width with a 16 in height ,what size sheet would fit . Thanks

    1. I have two King single electric adjustable beds that push together to make a bed 82 inches wide. I know I need two king single fitted sheets but can I buy top sheets a doonas anywhere?

  4. I have a bed with size of width 6.5 ft and 7 ft length – mattress thickness is 1 ft, what size of bed sheet should I purchase?

    1. You could try a California King, but don’t get fitted because it will already be slightly too small in width but correct in length.

    2. If its 6 x 6.5 in width, that is called European King.. Or Super King. Mostly Asian/European countries have that size. Bedbath and Beond has a Wamsutta sheet brand that has 1 bedsheet option for that size in several colors. Good quality but expensive.

  5. My mattress is 77 in length, 80 wide and 8 in depth. What size sheets do I need? When I buy queen they’re too small but king are way too big!!!

    1. It sounds like you have a King size so stick with the King sheets. Perhaps try tucking / folding the sheets under the mattress in between the box spring / bed frame.

      1. You seem to be very knowledgeable. I just bought I guess a European queen 57 by 77 and the height of the mattress is 13.5 inches tall..not sure what sheets to buy. Nothing is “normal ” about it 🙁

        1. What size did you replace the 59×72 with? I’ve got to replace my camper mattress and I don’t even know where to begin.

  6. Christine welliver

I just ordered a 8 inch twin mattress and box spring. Is this a normal size twin. Can’t seem to figure it out.

  7. Hi, my family has a sofa bed in our guest room where the mattress is 52″ wide, 70″ long, and 4 1/2″ deep. Can you please advise what size sheets would fit it? We’ve tried them all at this point I think. Twin & full were too small, queen and king were too big. I’m beginning to think that maybe it requires specially made sheets?

    1. OMG, I have a sofa bed, EXACTLY that same size that I am searching for replacement sheets for….no luck……have you had any success since this posting?

    2. For thin mattresses, I would go for two top sheets, instead of trying to find a fitted sheet to fit snugly. I am old, so I grew up with straight sheets and learned to make “hospital corners” on the bottom sheet the way they do in the military. Google it for the method. If you do it right, the corners stay tight for a week. You can also get “sheet garters” to keep the corners snug when using a flat sheet as a bottom sheet.

  8. Louise Whittington

I have a hospital bed. I need a mattress for it I was told I could get a twin size 79″ length x 36″ Width would that work? Help please?

    1. Looking for a replacement mattress for our camper bed. It’s dimensions are 72” long and 60” wide what options are there to replace it with that will fit! Don’t mind going a few inches longer either way. But don’t want to go smaller.

  9. Full XL 53″ x 80″
seriously the hardest bed to find a frame and sheets to fit, what do you guys use for frame or sheets?? google isn’t helping! that’s a first. : (

  10. The proper fit would be an extra long full size sheet. Make sure the thickness of your mattress is within the specified sizes on the label (if yours is 10″ the proper label should say something like ‘for mattresses 8’ to 12″‘. People should not be fooled by “deep pocket sheets” if it doesn’t have a height range it could be any height,
Any twin/full frame will work, even twin, full, queen is fine, remember a standard frame doesn’t go all the way to the end of the mattress.

    1. Hi Barbara,

It sounds like you need some fitted sheets for a Twin XL. We don’t stock or supply these items, but you could perhaps find some by running a search on Amazon.

      Kind Regards

  11. My Terpurpedic mattess purchased in the US several years ago measures 72″ Wide and 77″ long measuring only the top of the mattress itself, not including the 4 sides. None of these descriptions seems correct. Is this a king or cali king or super king? What sheets should I buy?

    1. Hi Claudia,

The size you mention matches that of an RV Mattress. However for clarification and further advice you could try calling Tempurpedic Customer Services on 800-821-6621. Hope this helps.

  12. My bed measures 65 wide × 82 long and I can’t figure out the exact size is it a queen or king no luck finding answers

    1. Hi Mary,
For the bed dimensions that you have provided, you will need to buy an Olympic Queen size mattress, which measure at 66 in. x 80 in.
      Hope this helps.

  13. Will there be any bed with dimension of 120 inches length, or more than 120 inch, and 25 – 30 inch width, if so where can I buy them?

  14. I’m about to get a new bed and it’s 60″ W x 14″ H x 80″ D I got queen fitted sheets that are 60” W x 80” L x 12” Depth will they fit? It’s a serta perfect sleeper

  15. So we bought an icomfort twin xl, 2 infact to go with our split adustable base. The length was supposed to be 80, but my husband is hanging off. We measured it and it’s only 76.5 in long. Is it a defect, or should we pick an entirely different mattress?

    1. Considering the amount of shortage it may well be a defect. Raise it with their customer support team for clarification.

  16. Hi Lindsey! I need to get sheets for my queen pillow top bed..I’ve measured it with just the bed and 3” My Pillow topper… it comes to 17 “ (I need the extra because have had back surgery) I’m having a custom linen sheet made because I can’t do the struggle of having to buy a king that’s too big! do I get the pockets 21” or 22”?
    Thank you so much!!!

    1. Hi Charlene,
This is a tricky one. I would go with 22″ to begin with and if it needs altering it would be easier than falling short with a 21.”
      Hope this helps.

  17. Susan Ramelli

Our mattress is 78 x 78 x 10 (Inches). We are so eager to find fitted sheets. Tucking in the sheets has not been successful!

    1. Hi. i’m having the same problem. It also measures 78 x 78 ” and we can’t find any fitted sheet anywhere to that size.

    2. Carla Ingrid Mueller

Where did you find you 78X78 Mattress? I have one, or actually it’s 2 twin beds put together by a strap, and I’m looking for a mattress that will fit? but I can’t find that size? a ‘king’ is either 76X80, or 76X82?

      Carla

  18. Hi Lindsey! I’ve imported mattress from Asia, which measured Width 42″ Length 78″, Now, I am looking for Box spring or bunky board for it, the closest I got was Twin XL, can you please suggest ? Thanks

    Rgds

    1. Did you ever find fitted sheets? My bed is 78 x 78 and it’s IMPOSSIBLE to find any and anything I buy SUCKS lol! We have to readjust and re-strap the sheets EVERY DAY over and over again!!!!!!

      1. My bed is 78×78 I found super soft jersey sheets at Walmart that fit! They feel like a vintage T-shirt and stretch like you wouldn’t believe!

  19. More and more of us are needing “hospital” beds at home, and their mattresses are only 36″ wide. That’s not too bad, for a twin fitted sheet – except that the length of the mattress exceeds the sheet by at least 4″! Is any bed linens maker paying any attention to that? Just because they’re hospital beds doesn’t mean they are only used in hospitals, or that we should have to put up with plain white sheets and pillow cases. I like pastel florals – others might like plaids, stripes, geometrics, paisleys, what-have-you. Older patients don’t need to be “reminded” that they’re in hospital bed all the time – color and patterns help elevate the mood.

  20. We have twin beds and the mattress is very thick. All of the fitted mattresses come off. Please help. Thank you.

  21. georgiana brown

I have a sofa sleeper that mattress measures 60 wide and 70 long, is there any replacement mattress that size available?

  22. I’m replacing a mattress, a 1988 Sealy folding couch. The length is 70″ and that’s no problem. The width of the frame fits a 61″ mattress, but it is a lot cheaper if I go with a 60″ (it is supposed to be queen size). Is there any problem using a mattress that is just a little smaller than the frame size? Thanks for the info.

  23. We have a Super King bed that we brought from overseas. We want to replace the mattress but having a hard time finding one. Any suggestions where to look?

      1. We are looking for a bedframe for our current set of box spring/ mattress. The mattress measures 78×78. I’m having a hard time finding a frame that fits. What is the “name” for this size?

        1. I’ve not come across this size before. When and where did you purchase the mattress? It could be custom-built or imported from outside the US where sizes can vary.

  24. Stephany T Murphy

My mattress is 72W X 80L. I have tried both King and California King size sheets and neither fit. What size sheets do I need?

  25. I have a twin trundle bed…the length of it is 74 inches. It is a four sided “box”, not an open slat bed. I can only find mattresses that are 74 inches long. I am assuming that will not fit?

    1. It might be a tight fit, but you should get an inch or so to play with, especially if it’s an all-foam mattress. Could potentially squeeze in..

  26. I have a mattress that is 80 in x 42in. Which sheets? Super single waterbed sheets re close but they don’t fit the depth of this mattress.

  27. I have purchased a king mattress that measures 76 wide 82 long. All the sheets I have try are too tight. Is it a king? Any suggestions?
